Mannered Meal!!!

Our mannered meal was a great success !!!!

Here is our menu:
Chinese dumplings (veggie and pork)
Cauliflower, chickpea feta salad
Lemon and fennel chicken
Vegetarian chili
Chana masala
Cranberry, pear gingersnap crumble

It was hard work we spent the last week preparing all of the food and setting up the tables. However all the food was super delicious and we still had tons of leftovers and was totally worth it. A huge thanks to all the parents who helped us in the kitchen and who brought us ingredient and of course to Tiiu.

Serving it buffet style.

We made a whole lot of dumplings in our fancy clothes.
 Evan waiting...
 A whole lot a sugar.
 70 plates of crumble later.
Setting the table for the big afternoon.
Nom Nom Nom, that looks delicious.
cooking 300 dumplings.
Give me a taste of everything.
Our meal was fantastic.
We had some special guests like Owen, Shauna's class, Emma (our old student teacher)and Jack (Tiiu's old student)

Mannered Meals So Far

A big thank you to all of the parent volunteers who have come in to help so far! We have finished making our vegetarian chili, the chana masala, and half of the veggie dumplings. We have made many teachers salivate with the delicious aromas that we've been creating.

Stuffed!

A big thank you to Michelle, Angie, Erin, and Lucila for coming in to help us with our sock stuffies. This is a tradition in my class and remains one of my most favourite days. The students were really focused and made some creative new buddies.

Revamping Genius Hour

We are revamping Genius Hour for the new year. Here are some questions we are wondering about which might be the starting point for a new Genius Hour project.

Hour of Code

Today we took part in the Hour of Code.

Yesterday, we looked at a graph from the Hour of Code website. We also watched a video about working in the computer science field. These are some things that we inferred from those two things:

  • Not many people are interested in computer sciences
  • That computer jobs are growing at a faster rate than students that are taking computer science in school
  • This industry tries to make it really fun to work there because they want people to work for them and there aren't many people available to hire
  • Because there is more technology in our lives, there are more jobs available in this industry
  • When the environment is comfortable and enjoyable, then it is easier to focus and get creative
  • Every job these days has some aspect of technology so everyone can gain from studying it
  • Even celebrities like Chris Bosh, who studied computer science in college, and Will I Am, who is studying computer science right now, understand the importance of knowledge in this industry

So, to acknowledge the importance of computer science, today we participated in the Hour of Code.
The Hour of Code helped us to program computers. We were coding the red bird from Angry Birds and the zombie from Plants vs. Zombies. Some examples of coding language that we learned are: move forward, turn right, move until, if this than that, if else, and repeat until.

It was enjoyable. There are other activities and tutorials that students are free to explore. You can find them here.

Social Studies Timeline By: Sharky and Julianna

Our last day with Emma. We made her a poster similar to the one we made for social studies. We are really missing her in the class! But we know she will become an amazing teacher one day!
Social Studies living museum prep : on Wednesday all the junior classes met in the gym to discuss and start the prep for are awesome living museum. We started by talking about BCE (before common era) CE (common era) and the year zero (when common era begins). Then we went around sticking each century from 3000 BCE to now 2013 CE. After we split into groups and were each given an ancient civilization, then we marked out with streamers how long the civilization lasted. Haida has been around since 3000 BCE to now and the Inca's have been around less then a century. After that  Andrew taught us about some of the civilizations and where they were located and what they brought to our future. Finally we took some very historically important dates and posted them up all around the gym (ex. Oxford University, The first printing press, the Koran, King Tuts death, Beethoven, Galileo's discovery, internet and the first plane ect.)

We found out Andrew knows a lot about history!
This was the Haida group. It went all the way around the gym!
We were amazed at how many civilizations overlapped.

We learned about lots of famous buildings in different civilizations.

We were definitely busy creating our time line!
