Math Mistakes





Big and Small Numbers

Lesson Goal: I can build large numbers out of small numbers.

Choose two numbers. One is really big and the other is pretty small. Tell how many of the small numbers it would take to make the big one.

Red: Pick numbers between 1 and 100

Yellow:  Pick numbers between 1 and 100 000

Green: Pick numbers between 0.01 and 1

Neon Green: Pick numbers between 0.001 and 1 000 000


Choose your question wisely based on making sure that learning is taking place. If you choose two numbers that are too easy for you, you won't be learning anything.

What is something that you learned?
Blade learned that he could use patterns from the answers that he found using a calculator to quickly find answers using different numbers.
Evan learned that he could use division to find an answer in an efficient way.
Finley, Sohail, and others learned how to divide with decimals.
Kailee learned that, with perseverance, she could find an answer in the green level by building up the small number.
I learned that when dividing by decimals, it is like dividing by 10s. It is really a matter of moving your decimal.
Quinn learned that multiplying by base tens moves the decimal to the right and dividing by base tens moves the decimal to the left.

Aquaponics


In class we are starting a system called Aquaponics, it is where you have a fish and you use the fishes manure as the soil and you grow vegetables in clay balls. 
Jack (Tiiu's former student) got a grant to study aquaponics with our class, and came in to talk to us about pollution and how it affects our environment, after he talked to us about Nitrogen and what plants need to survive:
  • H2O-Water(Hydrogen 2 oxygen)
  • CO2-Carbon dioxide 


Next he talked about parasites and asked us what a parasite was and it is a being that takes but never gives. Then he talked about what a symbiotic relationship is and we gave examples of different symbiotic and parasitic relationships are.

We split up into three groups to try three different ways of planting, the three groups were soil, insulation, and plastic bags. We were planting broccoli, tomato's, kale, and spinach.

They left and came back this week and we got started on the actual tank and system, we had to fix the tubes that would transfer the fish water to the garden. After that, we dumped the clay balls into the garden. Then we made the tank for the fish and dumped all the water into the tank. They will be coming back next week to do more. We'll keep you posted!

Living Museum and Other Updates

Since coming back from the break, students have been very busy getting back into the swing of things and immersing themselves into new projects and units. Here is an update:

Language
In Language, we have started a new routine and are looking to re-vamp our ECLIPSE program. One activity we have added is Working With Words. For this activity, students choose frequently used words that they are having trouble spelling. Using this word, they complete different short activities in order to really look at the patterns and try to commit them to memory.
Students have also started POW or Paragraph of the Week. In this routine, we start the week off with an interesting prompt. Students spend the first day brainstorming ideas. On day two, they plan and write just the body of their piece. Day three has students writing and introduction and conclusion. On day four, students edit using ARMS and COPS and produce a final draft. The big idea behind this activity is to help students improve the structure and fundamentals of writing.
We have also been sharing one of my favourite novels of all time. Ask students about "The Giver".

Math
We are just starting a new unit on Two Dimensional Geometry. We are starting with a look at angles and then we will look at classifying and drawing specific two-dimensional shapes.

Science
This Friday, we have some students helping to kick off our new units in Matter and Electricity.

Art
Ask students about what style Rene Magritte painted in and the concepts and ideas that he liked to explore.

Living Museum
Students have completed a proposal, did and elevator pitch for their project, and phrased Research Questions to guide them in their research. All research has hopefully been collected. Students are now working on their Visual/Dramatic presentations. In class, we are building a rubric to be used for their final presentations. I will share it with you when it is ready. Students will be Fish Bowling (dress rehearsal) in class on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week to prepare for Thursday.

Genius Hour
We are giving Genius Hour another go with some modifications. Students are in the process of formulating questions that they are passionate to learn more about.

Hi Friends.
