It is hard to believe that a whole month has gone by!

Last week in science, while some of us were trying to wrap our brains around the distances between bodies in space, the rest of the class was looking at the relative sizes of the planets. Following a set of instructions and starting with a 3 pound lump of plasticene, here are the sizes that we came up:

While looking at the results, someone wondered aloud how many people could fit on Pluto. We looked up some data about the population of Earth, Canada, and Ottawa, and then tried to figure out a solution. It was an interesting and spontaneous discussion.

We are going to start working on an in-class project in Science and Literacy. Students will be creating a persuasive travel brochure, geared towards a specific audience, to a body in space. So far, we have looked at the text features of a brochure, discussed some persuasive writing techniques, and taken a look at some brochures and what worked in them versus what did not work.

Next up, we will be doing some research. The following is the list of students and the planets that they chose:
